When revenue drops, many salon owners react the same way: run a promotion, change products, spend more on ads. None of these is necessarily wrong — but without first finding where the real problem is, the money usually treats the pain, not the cause.
A good doctor doesn't prescribe before running tests. Running a salon is no different — diagnose first, then prescribe.
What is a Salon MRI?
We split a salon's health check into three areas. Take the first letters and you get MRI:
- M — Million: Does your salon have what it takes to reach a million a year? Is customer count, average ticket or return rate the ceiling?
- R — Retention: Keeping customers, staff and cash. Are customers coming back? Are staff staying? Is cash staying in the business?
- I — Investment: Is this business still worth investing in? If not, it's better to plan early.
Why data?
An owner's instinct matters, but instinct is coloured by recent events. Lose two big customers last week and it feels like "everyone is leaving"; run one successful campaign and it feels like "business is great".
Data doesn't lie. When every customer's history, every staff member's sales and every prepaid card's usage are viewed together, the problems usually reveal themselves.
If a piece of data isn't available, that part of the report stays blank — like a health check without a blood test. The blank itself is a signal that something needs fixing.
After the report
The report is only the start. We spend 30 minutes walking through it with you, pick the one or two most urgent issues, then update the report every month to check that improvement is really happening.
A report alone won't lift revenue — but a report you can understand tells you where to go next.
